Objects of Desire:
Conversations With
Luis Bunuel
by Jose de la Colina, et al.
This is probably the best collection of interviews with a filmmaker ever
published. It is not some retread to "My Last Sigh" but a great read
full of insight, intelligence, that typical Buñuel style and of course, a study
of great cinema. It's a fascinating book, where Buñuel discusses his life and
works and how he came to be inspired to make some of his greatest films like
"Un Chien Andalou," "Viridiana" and "That Obscure
Object Of Desire." And it's also great to read as Buñuel discusses his
philosophies of life and surrealism. The interviewers create a great
conversation with a genius and take us into his mind. Some of the classic works
of the cinema are dissected here in intricate detail and Buñuel offers some sly
humor to the discussions. A surprise is that you realize that Buñuel's personal
life is as interesting, fascinating and incredibile as his movies. Some people
may not want to take a look at this book after reading "My Last Sigh,"
thinking it's basically the same stuff, well, it's not. Luis Buñuel was a very
complex man in his thinking and this book gives us a good tour of the man. A
must for lovers of great cinema and fans of surrealism and Buñuel. Lorca, Dalí,
and the surrealists are all discussed here, even the gruesome, fatal fates of
the two actors of "Un Chien Andalou." Great book.

Abducted
II: The Reunion
(1994)
This confused sequel to Abducted
(1986) features some gorgeous Vancouver wilderness scenery, lovingly
photographed by Danny
Nowak, in the service of an unappealing Deliverance
variant. Vern (Lawrence
King), the crazed wild man long presumed dead, abducts three female
campers, taking one of them, Maria (Raquel
Bianca), to his cave in the woods where he plans to impregnate her until
he learns that she is not a virgin. Revolted, Vern makes Maria wear a horned
buckskin mask, and she plays along, waiting to attack when the time is
right. Dan
Haggerty returns from the first film as Vern's father, who tracks down
his son after fighting with a crazed hunter (Jan-Michael
Vincent), only to be murdered. The cast is adequate, but Boon
Collins's tepid adventure is hopelessly flawed. The long, superfluous
scenes of Vincent
and Haggerty
gutting (real) rams and other wildlife while debating the merits of hunting
will offend many viewers, and the script is muddled and unrealistic, with
some of the most preposterous dialogue since the original. At its core, Abducted
II: The Reunion is a rape-revenge movie with no rape, a moralistic
diatribe with no morals, and a horror film with no horror. In other words, a
complete waste of time. 85 min. —All Movie Guide

money. One day they decide to take a trip in their beat-up car, managing the
whole affair in their own special, insouciant manner. They are followed by a
suspicious policeman who thinks there's something fishy about this group. As
part of their play they tie the girl up, apparently leaving her behind, but
she adamantly refuses to be rescued and heaps abuse on anyone who tries,
including the hapless policeman. At some point she goes off with an Eastern
monarch, leaving her lovers behind. She returns, and soon the trio is once
again sniping at puzzled interlopers, playfully going about their business
of confusing everyone. Later on in the film they are seen depositing their
son at school where he is awaited by two young girls.French with English subtitles.

Chained Heat(1983)
Linda Blair plays Carol, a young woman who must serve 18 months in
prison after killing a man (by accident). The prison turns out to be
brimming with decadence, corruption and sleaze, where the other female
inmates are sadistic crack-selling lesbian rapists and the guards and warden
are no better. Racial tensions are high as the inmates are divided
into two factions, blacks and whites, who must either join together against
the management or kill each other trying. A sleazy blend of sexploitation
and blaxploitation make this movie a real winner, or, as one reviewer
enthused, "The Citizen Kane of women in prison movies." 95 min.

Night
Patrol(1984)
This movie is definitely not for everyone. It's a rude,
crude, and offensive imitation of the "Police Academy" genre, but,
taken at the level of a guilty pleasure, it must be considered some kind of
a classic. This film aims not so much below the belt, but more like straight
towards the gutter, featuring crude one-liners and a flatulent "little
person" (Billy Barty). Its targets include gays, women, minorities,
police, and almost every other group imaginable. Cast includes "Gong
Show" alumni such as Jaye P. Morgan and The Unknown Comic, faded names
like Pat Paulsen and Linda Blair, and actual stars like Pat Morita (in one
of the most surreal scenes ever) and Andrew Dice Clay. More importantly,
especially in the post-Rodney King era, it paints LA cops as degenerates,
getting high with the drug dealers they should be busting and blithely
shooting innocent bystanders. All in all, not to be missed for fans of bad
taste. 82 min.

Bedroom Eyes 2
(1991) This sequel to 1986's Bedroom Eyes is the mixture as before, with
Wings Hauser replacing the first film's star Kenneth Gilman. Once again,
stockbroker Hauser begins succumbing to his chronic voyeurism. And also once
again, his obsession gets him mixed up in a murder. The film's secondary
villain—revealed early on, so we're not spoiling anything—is the vengeful
twin sister (Linda Blair) of Hauser's late wife. The real villain is.....but
now we would be spoiling things, though veteran filmgoers will be able to

SOLANGE BLONDEAU
La Grande Bouffe
(1973)
Subversive Italian satirist Marco
Ferreri directed and co-wrote (with Rafael Azcona) this grotesquely amusing French black comedy about four men who
grow sick of life, and so meet at a remote villa with the goal of literally
eating themselves to death. The quartet comes from various walks of life —
a pilot (Marcello Mastroianni), a chef (Ugo Tognazzi), a television host (Michel
Piccoli), and a judge (Philippe Noiret) — but all are successful men with excessive appetites for
life's pleasures (food is used as mere metaphor here, as graphic as that
metaphor becomes). 130 min. —All Movie Guide
Savage Nights [Les nuits fauves](1994) Savage Nights is a semi-autobiographical story of
the rebellion of a suburban Frenchman with AIDS (writer-director Cyril
Collard) who carelessly slips in and out of bisexual affairs. A major hit in
France, where it won the César (the French equivalent of an Oscar) three
days after its creator died of AIDS, this is a bitter, energetic look at
love in the '90s, one that is far removed from Jonathan Demme's more
whitewashed Philadelphia. Collard's story is jumbled, but his
presence is inviting as a latter-day bohemian. Romane Bohringer (The
Accompanist) plays one of his loves, a woman with maddening devotion.

Emmanuelle
(1974) Emmanuelle
(1974)
The first and most infamous of the French softcore-porn series about a young
woman's awakening to new sexual dimensions. Sylvia
Kristel became a star with her portrayal of Emmanuelle, the suppressed
wife of a diplomat. By virtue of her husband's profession, Emmanuelle is
introduced to any number of handsome, virile men and beautiful, adventurous
women, all more than willing to escort the sheltered young lady to the
farthest reaches of sensuality. Nudity and eroticism abounds in Emmanuelle,
but the sex scenes are discreetly photographed (shadows and elusive camera
angles predominate) to evoke eroticism and suggestiveness in lieu of raunch.
As the Emmanuelle
series dragged on, the sex became more perfunctory and the storylines
overladen with gimmicks; this film is comparatively basic and
straightforward. Emmanuelle
is based on the allegedly autobiographical book by Emmanuelle
Arsan. Rated "X" when originally released. 105 min. —All

Angel
Heart(1987)
Set in Harlem and New Orleans in
1955, this supernatural thriller stirred a brief controversy when released
in 1987 because some scenes featuring Lisa Bonet (then a popular cast member
of The Cosby Show) were considered too sexually explicit to be rated
R. The edited material was restored for this unrated video release. The plot
is about a sullen detective (Mickey Rourke) who is hired to find a missing
person by a shady client with pointy fingernails named Louis Cyphre
(Lucifer, get it?). Rourke's investigation leads him into an underworld of
voodoo and forbidden desires, and as the mystery unfolds director Alan
Parker fills every scene with conspicuous style and atmospheric excess. The
performances of Rourke, Robert De Niro, Bonet, and Charlotte Rampling are
well suited to the ominous mood. Widescreen anamorphic format. 113 min.

The Hitchhiker - The Complete First Season (Box Set)
(1983-84)
The title of this box set is misleading. It includes not only the three
episodes from season one (1983) but also the complete 1984 season, for a
total of 26 episodes in all. Nicholas
Campbell plays the unnamed man in blue jeans who drifts from one
frightening and suspenseful half-hour drama to another during The
Hitchhiker's first season on HBO. Three episodes are offered during
season one, each one profoundly weird and extremely R-rated. In "Shattered
Vows," Bruce
Campbell plays an avaricious water-skier who gets more than he bargains
for when he tries to romance the sexy stepdaughter (Aleisa
Shirley) of his wealthy wife. In "When
Morning Comes," a philandering husband (August
Schellenberg) is lured into a horrifying situation by a mysterious young
girl whom he encounters during a vacation in the woods. And in "Split
Decision," the blonde twin daughters of a circus performer (played
by real-life sisters Audrey
Landers and Judy
Landers) bring disaster into the life of an overeager real-estate agent
(Jackson
Davies). Page
Fletcher takes over from Nicholas
Campbell in the role of the ubiquitous title character during the second
season of the chilling and ofttimes erotic HBO anthology series The
Hitchhiker. Fletcher
shows up at the beginning and end of each of the season's ten half-hour
playlets, to offer pointed and ironic commentary on the bizarre and
suspenseful goings-on. The season begins with "Lovesounds,"
starring Klaus
Kinski as an electronics expert who makes a fatal mistake when is
"wired together" with another man's wife. Next up is "Remembering
Melody," wherein a greedy lawyer David
Dukes pays a terrible price for betraying a long-standing trust. "Face
to Face" features Robert
Vaughn as a brilliant plastic surgeon whose hedonistic private life
brings about his downfall. "And
If We Dream" is all about a telepathic romance that leads to a
grisly fate for a lovestruck teacher (Stephen
Collins). A two-bit hoodlum (Steve
Railsback) is given his comeuppance for forsaking his girlfriend in
order to get in good with a drug kingpin in "Petty
Thieves." "Videodate"
stars Gregg
Henry and Shannon
Tweed in a grim tale of two hustlers who end up outsmarting one another.
"A
Time for Rifles" details the tragedy of two Vietnam buddies who
fall for the same waitress (Kim
Lankford). Edward
Albert portrays a screenwriter whose obsession with realism results in
catastrophe in "Man
at the Window." Karen
Black is seen as a big-business barracuda who makes the mistake of
mistreating her newest employee in "Hired
Help." And in "Murderous
Feelings," a two-timing psychiatrist (Franco
Nero) must find a way to dispose of his lover — who also happens to be
his patient. Set of 3 discs, approx. 13 hours. —All Movie Guide

I Love You
(1981)
This Brazilian erotic exercise stars Sonia
Braga and Paulo
Cesar Pereio as lovers who aren't in love. Attracted to each other's
all-stops-out sexuality, Braga
and Pereio
use one another in every sense of the word. It is only at fadeout time that
they learn to their surprise that they have genuinely fallen for each other.
Though it shies away from closeups, I
Love You is about as hard-core as it's possible to get in a mainstream
film. Originally titled Eu
Te Amo, I
Love You made its American debut sans a rating of any kind —
"X" or otherwise. 100 min. —All Movie Guide
Gabriela
(1983) Gabriela

Armado's novel Gabriela, Clove and Cinammon, which also served as
the source of a typically steamy Brazilian TV soap opera. Set in 1925 (when
the novel was first published), the film stars Marcello
Mastrioanni as Nacib, a bartender in the Bahian village of Parati. When
a drought descends upon the surrounding countryside, slovenly-but-sexy
Gabriela (Sonja
Braga) wanders into Parati with some friends and relatives. Immediately
entranced by Gabriela's earthy sensuality, Nacib hires her as a cook and
potential lover. Jealous of the attentions paid to Gabriela by the local
menfolk, Nacib decides to marry her, then orders her to dress and behave in
a more prudish fashion. But Gabriela can't help straying sexually, and as
consequence it is Nacib who is forced to undergo the film's major character
transformation. 102 min. —All Movie Guide
