But what's striking here is not the familiar storyline--confused, sexually abused teen falls in with drugs and the wrong Southern California crowd, forges fake IDs to become Penthouse Pet of the Month at 16 and the '80s hottest adult star, then arrested as focus of the Reagan administration's crackdown on porn, only to become reborn as cleaned-up, psychoanalyzed/rehabed purveyor of legitimate film, TV, and music career. Rather, what's striking is Lords's capacity for denial, compartmentalization, and myopia when it serves her ends.

Her scandalous tenure in the skin trade--undeniably the sole basis for her infamy and subsequent legitimate career--is glossed over here in a few score pages, with more attention paid to the heavy-metal musicians that dotted her life than the motivations and machinations of the Feds who literally changed her life; Slash's snake gets more ink here than Attorney General Ed Meese. Quick to ladle generous sympathy on her own plight, she heaps little but scorn upon those from the seedy past of her porn-star alter-ego, yet seems to have had few qualms about formally adopting that moniker as her legal name.

Miss Jones (Georgina Spelvin), a lonely, depressed spinster, despairing that nothing exciting has ever happened in her life, or likely ever will, commits suicide. Although she's led an exemplary, if dull, life, suicide damns her. When she learns this at a way-station en route to Hell, she wishes she'd lived a more sinful life; she asks to return to earth briefly to pursue one of the seven deadly sins, lust. The clerk grants this wish, and she's first assigned a teacher (Harry Reems) who tells her to focus on pleasure even as he dispenses pain. After time with him, Miss Jones seeks pleasure with another woman, with a couple, with two men, with a stream of water from a bathtub hose, and with a bowl of fruit. When these adventures end, eternal punishment mocks her brief experiments with lust. Adapted from Jean-Paul Sartre's No Exit by writer/director Gerard Damiano as a follow-up to his phenomenally successful Deep Throat. 74 min.

A Touch of Genie (Grindhouse Collection) (1974) Rating
Joe Sarno has written and directed over 75 feature films in the sexploitation and soft-core subgenres as well as several films in the hard-core genre. Sarno's work is unique in offering unusual characters, taboo-probing situations and relationships, and psychologically compelling stories, as well as opportunities for his actors to contribute genuine performances. It might not be inappropriate to refer to 1973 through 1974 as Joe Sarno's shtick period. While Sarno's filmmaking sensibility is generally perceived to be intensely serious, during this brief two-year span he wrote and directed three features with clear comic intent (Deep Throat Part 2, A Touch of Genie, The Switch), all of which, since that time, have fallen more or less into obscurity.

Gerard Damiano's third fiction feature after Deep Throat and The Devil in Miss Jones is a dark and chilly fable, intended, he says, to carry on the story of the latter's heroine, Justine Jones, had she not committed suicide. In a secluded farmhouse in snow-bound Pennsylvania sometime in the 'thirties, an aging Miss Aggie (Deborah Ashira) describes to a companion Richard (Patrick L. Farrelly) a series of youthful sensual experiences, with her character played in each case by a different actress. Played by a young blond Kim Pope, she chooses to lose her virginity with Eric Edwards in a sequence notable for its extended,carefully observed foreplay. Edwards then visits a whore (Darby Lloyd Raines) who inflames him with a long episode of masturbation. And finally a girl (Mary Stuart), having excited herself by masturbating with a small doll, seduces a delivery man (Harry Reems). After each recollection, Richard questions Aggie's veracity. It's finally revealed that she is insane. The Richard to whom she speaks is the ghost of her first and only lover, whom she murdered when he threatened to leave her. While Deep Throat, Behind The Green Door, and numerous other titles have come to represent the "Golden Age" of adult film, this intimate, character-driven journey through the sexual and emotional entanglements of its three main characters (Georgina Spelvin, Harry Reems, and Valerie Marron) is superior in many ways to its better known brethren. While there are the usual awkward moments typical of adult films, the overall performances from the starring players are very good, particularly Georgina Spelvin, who could have easily tackled any mainstream role. Valerie Marron is effectively spacey (and sexy) in her pivotal title role. What really sets this film apart are the music score and the intelligent direction.
